I had an interesting conversation with an owner yesterday when I called her regarding her tenant vacating. I advised the rent I believed we could achieve and her response was, “I don’t care what you rent it for, but please don’t advertise the price”. Her reasoning was that family members and friends know that they own the property and would see what rent they get. “Last time someone said, ‘Oh your place is for rent again. That must be good collecting an extra $x each week’” I had a lengthy discussion with her about it and it ended with, “Just do what you have to do. If you feel you need to advertise the rent then do it”. It didn’t end on a bad note. She could see my reasoning behind advertising the price and agreed but is probably waiting for that first phone call, “Oh, you’re getting $x for it now”. Has anyone had a similar situation? |

That’s realy interesting Patrick. Just goes to show how many different landlords there are out there and how many differnt service levels, different relationships we must provide to accommodate them. Great example of letting us know not all Landlords want the same thing. |

Even with advertising the price you still get people ask how much it is. It would be difficult to rent a place without the rent being shown though |

I think the owner needs to learn the art of “mind your own business”. As the saying goes: once bitten twice shy. She should just bluntly advise them, “it is none of your business”, then shut up and walk away or hang up. This may sound rude, but nothing wrong with suggesting this to an owner- politely of course. Maybe they would appreciate this guidance.
